In July 2010, IfAÖ – Institute of Applied Ecology, represented by Dr. Tim Coppack and Dr. Andreas Schmidt, visited the Institute of Urban Environment (IUE) in Xiamen, China, together with Professor Holger Behm from Rostock University.

The IUE, an institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded in 2006 to explore processes of urbanization and associated strategies of environmental adaptation. In two workshops in the fields of ornithology and marine ecology, experts exchanged experiences in environmental research and in the design and implementation of environmental impact assessments. The focus was on new methodological and conceptual developments that shall lead to an expansion of national assessment standards. Environmental standards for the evaluation of anthropogenic impacts in marine and urban ecosystems must be based on a sound scientific background.

In a joint venture between IfAÖ, IUE and Rostock University, research projects will be launched to develop international guidelines for the assessment of marine ecosystems in urban catchment areas.
