IfAÖ, together with the University of Rostock just completed a project funded by DEG which involved German-Chinese cooperation in the field of marine environment. DEG, a subsidiary of KfW, is one of the largest European development finance institutions for long-term project and company financing. including structuring the investments of companies in developing and transition countries in order to contribute to sustainable progress.

The publicity related to this marine environment project caught the attention of a local student project which also involves German-Chinese cooperation in the area of environmental protection: Students of Grade 11 of the Gadebuscher High School collaborate with the Chinese Jinan Foreign Language School as part of the German-Chinese Student project "Climate-makers! Internationally.” The students work on actual projects and develop concepts; the project work includes a 2 week visit to the respective other country.

During the stay of the Chinese student group in Germany in August 2012, the IfAÖ Team had spontaneously decided to introduce the students of both countries to the work of the GICON Group. As part of a workshop held on August 14th, 2012 the team discussed the following specific topics with the 10 German and 10 Chinese 11th Graders:

  • Environmental impact of offshore wind farms and the offshore wind farm permitting process
  • Research in the field of ornithology re. collision prevention of migratory birds with offshore wind turbines
  • The GICON SOF, a floating foundation as an alternative solution for offshore wind turbines
  • The waste-to-biogas concept of the GICON biogas process


The workshop was assisted by the University of Rostock; Chinese graduate Ms. Tian Yu introduced the topic of her master thesis on offshore wind farms which was supported by employees of IfAÖ. The workshop was rounded off by a visit to the IfAÖ premises, including a storage site visit and explanation of the equipment used for environmental investigations, the scale model of the GICON SOF which has been used for actual tank tests and a visit to the IfAÖ laboratory. Overall, this was a successful event which, apart from information exchange also was a lot of fun.
