Assessment of landscape elements

A project on the evaluation of landscape elements in China is currently being developed at the Institute of Urban Environment (IUE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Xiamen in cooperation with the group of Dr Tao Luo. Herein, the Rostock model of landscape assessment is being applied. Questionnaire surveys shall show how landscape perception and personality are linked. The first section of the questionnaire acquires personal information and preferences for certain landscape elements, for example, whether mangroves are preferred over cliffs. In the second part of the survey, photos of landscapes in the vicinity of Wuhan are presented to test persons over a defined period. The perceived landscape elements are subsequently evaluated and sorted by importance. From this information, a rank for each landscape element can be calculated to find out which landscape elements need to be considered in future town planning. The project is part of long-standing partnership with Prof. Holger Behm (Rostock University).
